How to Prepare for OET Listening

This guide explains OET Listening preparation for healthcare professionals: once-only audio tactics, prediction, and spelling discipline — then points you to free timed practice on OET Practice. Always confirm timing and rules on the official OET website — official requirements can change.

Before each extract

  1. Read the questions and underline content words.
  2. Predict the answer type for each blank: number, name, symptom, place.
  3. Note paraphrases the audio might use instead.

During the audio

  1. Write the first thing that fits; refine if the speaker confirms it.
  2. If you miss one, let it go — the next answer is already coming.
  3. For multiple choice, eliminate options the speaker contradicts.

Part C under time pressure

Part C often feels vague. Predict the next idea from the question stem, then listen for confirmation or a distractor. If wording feels ambiguous, eliminate options the speaker contradicts and move on — do not freeze. Calibrate difficulty against official sample tests first; some third-party sets feel harder (why that happens).

After: spelling and transfer

Part A answers must be correctly spelled. Use check time to fix plurals, verb forms, and drug names — small errors cost whole marks.
