Why doctors take OET

Medical registration in English-speaking systems commonly requires proof of clinical English. OET assesses the communication doctors actually use — referrals, consultations, explanations — so preparation strengthens daily practice as well as exam readiness.

Doctor-relevant practice

  • Writing: GP referrals, specialist referrals, discharge summaries with management plans.
  • Speaking: breaking news sensitively, explaining risks and options, negotiating management.
  • Listening: histories, handovers, and professional presentations.
  • Reading: guidelines, research summaries, and opinion pieces under time pressure.

Vocabulary focus

Start with presentation verbs (rule out, correlate, attribute), investigation language (unremarkable, consistent with, borderline), and plain-English risk phrasing for patients. The vocabulary guide has a starter list with examples.

Suggested path

  1. Take one full mock to find your weakest sub-test.
  2. Drill that skill with single-part practice.
  3. Re-take the full mock and compare bands in your dashboard.
