Common OET Reading Mistakes (and Fixes)

Mistake 1: answering from knowledge
Clinicians naturally answer what is true. OET asks what the text says. Fix: underline the words in the option that must appear in the passage, and reject options you cannot point to.
Mistake 2: choosing familiar wording
Distractors copy passage phrases out of context. Fix: re-read the question stem after choosing — does your option answer that question?
Mistake 3: reading everything, timing nothing
Full reads feel safe and run out the clock, especially in Part A. Fix: practise with the 15/10/20 split until it is automatic, and guess-and-move rather than stall.
Mistake 4: treating every mock as the real score
